Job Summary :
The Database Engineering Specialist provides simple to complex engineering and other applications maintenance activities aligned to the Structured Query Language (SQL) database administration (DBA) of platforms and associated business applications supported by Platform Services within the Compute Services (CS) for Enterprise Workplace Technology (EWT).
The role develops project based solutions including engineering design, development, configuration and implementation of said solutions to maintain operational readiness.
The role performs technical planning, architecture development and systems design activities based on business strategic directives that have been agreed with Information Technology (IT) leadership or general and identified changes required for compliance with EY’s standards for technology development and deployment.
The role is aligned to the maturity curve specific to the SQL database service’s lifecycle and related production releases within the CS managed environment and acts within the confines of Operating Level Agreements (OLA) or Service Level Agreements (SLA) and metrics measuring same such as Mean Time to Repair (MTTR).
The role collaborates with appropriate peers and others within EWT and with vendors, as assigned, on the design, configuration, performance tuning and deployment activities including efforts to identify measures in scalability, supportability, production design specifics, validation testing, release packaging, change control objectives and general engineering support.
The role is expected to interpret assigned business issues and recommend or identify appropriate engineering solutions to maintain business as usual (BAU) functionality as well as to mentor or collaborate with peers as necessary in solution engineering across complex hosted environments including shared and clustered environments.
The role provides development services between PS, CS and EWT with role appropriate levels of specialized knowledge in SQL DBA technologies development, DevOps technologies, and can additionally support aspects of project management such as results capture.
The role is generally an individual contributor and is managed by the Database Services Team Lead for PS in CS.
Essential Functions of the Job :
The role requires you to have hands-on technical experience and a can-do approach towards environment automation / management and continuous improvement.
Identifies impacted business units and the necessary technical resourcing to restore or modify services. Recommends change readiness and compatibility directives as well as timing required to achieve success in the assigned activities.
Advances knowledge of the ancillary technologies to be engineered and the best practices in engineered solutions to maintain the assigned SQL technologies within aspects of lifecycle management and continuous improvement directives.
Now to capture and update the received engineering assignment and solutions taken as part of services management directives.
Analytical / Decision Making Responsibilities : The role requires an analytical acumen and solution orientation to understand the nuances of the assigned SQL DBA applications and platforms in current use across geographic regions and to execute engineered solutions within the directives of the role’s remit.
Utilizes knowledge of appropriate SQL products and the SQL DBA platforms to make appropriate decisions including the efficient handling of change impacts and other engineering directives.
The role additionally requires consultative questioning, influence management and critical thinking skills to understand a current directive and to recommend or identify viable engineering solutions that are both cost effective and supporting the value to the business.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements :
Supervision Responsibilities : The role is generally an individual contributor but may be asked to supervise a team for a specific time frame or within a particular project.
In managing people the role will require basic management skills inclusive of setting objectives, reviewing accomplishments, coaching for success and counselling for improvement.
Assigned staff and activities may require working in remote locations and / or in a work from home setting that will require distance management skills across locations, cultures and time zones.
The role itself is generally guided by the Team Lead of Database Services within PaaS for CS. Other Requirements : The role may generally be supervised remotely and potentially across time zones, using telephone, email and instant messaging.
As such the role requires the advanced discipline of self-direction and autonomy as needed in a remote working or work from home arrangement.
The role may also require the periodic allocation of additional time on the job to ensure multiple demands and escalating issues are managed in a timely manner to restore services.
Education : College degree in computer related field or equivalent work experience. Experience : Approximately 5 to 7 years of experience in SQL database technology support specific to large complex global organizations.
Certification Requirements : Certifications in Database and Cloud Technologies preferred.
