About the RFDS

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) has been responding to health care needs in country Australia for the past 92 years.

Operating under a federated company structure, the RFDS consists of seven entities Central Operations (covering SA and NT), Queensland Section, South Eastern Section, Tasmania Section, Victoria Section, Western Operations and a Federation (national) office.

The RFDS is one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisations in the world, providing extensive primary healthcare and 24-hour emergency service to people over an area of 7.

69 million square kilometres.

Almost half of all patients the RFDS provides services to identify as Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander. The RFDS respects and acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the First Australians, and is strongly committed to improved health outcomes and access to health services.

Key Responsibilities

Drawing on previous experience, this position will be responsible for providing support, expert advice and coordination from a national level to the 6 RFDS Sections and Operations and the Federation Office on key RAP activities.

Working collaboratively with RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) Working Group representatives and relevant staff in RFDS Sections and Operations and the Federation Office, both individually and collectively, this position will provide expert advice and coordinate the achievement key RFDS RAP commitments including :

  • Assessing the RFDS as a culturally safe workplace, identifying necessary improvements and driving development of a national Indigenous Employment Strategy;
  • Ensuring the RFDS is a provider of culturally safe, appropriate and responsive services, identifying necessary improvements and driving development of national Clinical Cultural Safety Standards;
  • Coordinating a review of cultural learning needs and identifying opportunities for collaboration throughout the RFDS and with external Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations to meet these needs;
  • Aligning RAP actions, policies and initiatives to accreditation requirements and frameworks;
  • Developing methods to demonstrate evidence of changed practices and meaningful improvements.

    This is a newly created position and an exciting opportunity to drive key reconciliation activities within the RFDS and the communities we provide services.

    This position can be located in any RFDS Office across the country, reporting to the RFDS Federation Office Director of Policy & Programs based in Canberra.


    Salary will be negotiated with the successful candidate on the basis of comparison to similar positions across the Federation, and recognising the national functions to be undertaken.
