Summary and Scope

As a Manager of Data Engineering, you will lead a team that builds and maintains the software engineering capabilities for Rise Interactive analytics and data management systems.

You should have a strong data-centric engineering foundation with the ability to bring the rest of the team along with in designing and building services.

Given a high-level business mission, you should be able to architect an end-to-end data solution involving heterogeneous sources, performant ETL application(s), integrated schema design, and efficient data access patterns.

You will be a strong communicator to influence your internal team, product owners, external stakeholders, and users to help them to understand and adopt our software and find new uses for it in the organization.


  • Lead software delivery team for next generation Rise products; including contributing to the production code base
  • Oversee technical product development from concept to release and ongoing maintenance / support
  • Provide technical direction, guidance, and hands-on management to team members
  • Ensure the technical infrastructure strategy, configuration and management for Rise products is fast, resilient and scalable
  • Mentor and guide career paths of team members
  • Establish and evolve consistent technology frameworks, platforms, standards and processes that enable developers to implement compelling software
  • Assist in the design and implementation of database changes across our environments
  • Oversee the creation of team deliverables (including architecture and technical design documentation, code, test plans / cases, release plans)
  • Collaborate with product managers, scrum masters, project managers, engineers, testers and designers throughout the product lifecycle
  • Assist with technology research, selection and proof of concepts processes
  • Stay abreast of new and innovative trends in software development and the web and data software product space
  • Collaborate heavily with fellow developers, designers and analysts to solve problems
  • Help write new design patterns, improve and adapt existing design component integration
  • Set and follow coding standards
  • Ensure the Connex data platform is consistent, shared, and common across applications
  • Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a computer science or equivalent professional experience
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills are required
  • Previous Experience in agile / scrum environments
  • 6+ years of relevant professional experience in a similar position
  • 3+ years of leadership experience in software architecture, design and development
  • Smart, high aptitude to learn new things and sense of urgency to get things done.
  • Extremely strong ETL programming skills using tools like Python, Spark, PySpark, Hadoop, MapReduce, Kafka
  • Experience building data access layers via cubes, data marts, APIs, or visualization tools like Tableau or D3
  • Practical experience with Big data and NoSQL technologies desired
  • Significant real-world experience developing real products at large scale
  • Experience building highly-scalable or high-volume ETL, data warehouse and analytics solutions
  • Strong programming skills with experience writing object-oriented code
  • Experience working with database technologies (MSSQL, MySQL, Hadoop, Spark, NoSQL)
  • Can write well performing queries to access data from a database
  • Experienced with source control (Git, SVN, TFS) and bug tracking software
  • Strong SQL and data analysis experience
  • Comfortable working with several large, complex SQL databases and SQL queries
  • Experience working in cloud-only infrastructure, AWS preferred
  • Team player demonstrated experience on a team that shipped a product
  • Professional developer experienced with source control (Git) and bug tracking
  • Practical-minded chooses stability / reliability / maintainability over shiny new objects
  • Passionate about technology ideally you build things outside of work for fun
