Job Description

The Legal Associate Director of Argentina and Chile is a strategic role with high exposure at the Affiliate level, responsible for providing extensive oversight, guidance, and legal advice to Biogen's Brazilian Affiliate in the country.

The role is located in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with a direct reporting line to the Latam Legal Director.

This position will support the mission to drive a robust corporate culture that embraces integrity in our operations, consistent with the core values and principles of Biogen's Code of Conduct, and absolute compliance with country laws.

This includes providing subject matter expertise and leadership on legal-related matters within the organization and ensuring the Affiliate operates in a world-class legal environment, effectively, efficiently and pro-actively managing legal risks while offering lawful business-oriented solutions, in a manner that is easily understood and applied by the company.

As Associate Legal Director, this person will be a legal advisor to the General Manager (GM) and the management team of the affiliate, being a member of the Affiliate's leadership team.

The position is also responsible for partnering with the business leaders to deliver sustainable business strategies, drive the right behaviors through communication and training, and is responsible for helping shape the external environment by driving industry-wide standards that are consistent with Biogen's core values.

It is a strategic and operational role, requiring a practical approach and business partner mentality. The successful candidate will need to work independently, with a hand s-on approach, able to adapt swiftly to a fast-paced changing business environment.

This role will be responsible for supporting all major local business franchises (MS, SMA, Alzheimer, pipeline, digital) and operational functions, as well as responsible for the company's litigation strategy and management.

The successful candidate will have to work in full collaboration with Argentina and Chile Assoc. Compliance Director to ensure the business is performed with Ethics and to embed compliance culture into the organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in law required. Advanced degree in law, accounting or business administration is a plus.
  • Strong experience as a qualified attorney in Argentina, preferably in a multinational pharmaceutical company, with strong business acumen and balanced sense of judgment.
  • Prior work experience as an Associate Director is a plus.

  • Well versed in industrial property law, corporate, anti-trust, commercial, tenders, tax, labor and privacy law. Excellent knowledge in health care regulation, especially regulatory law, rare diseases & technology transfer.
  • Ability to influence others to drive action and unlock problems, without creating disruption and while defending recommendations throughout the company.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills directed to sophisticated and front-line junior audiences, including the ability to synthetize complex information into executive messages.
  • Ability to integrate partial information from different sources and make sound judgment even with ambiguity.
  • Proven judgment in working through complex issues, including those with potential strategic risk to the company.
  • Experience working in and being comfortable with matrix organization and reporting lines, and cross-functional teams without clear single leadership.
  • Able to operate at a high level of autonomy and has proven that he or she is able to very competently lead a complex area of responsibility or department that requires significant experience, balancing multiple demands.
  • Effectively and practically deliver legal and business advice that mitigates risk.
  • Able to represent legal on country-wide or region-wide strategic initiatives and highly complex cross-geography business transactions.
  • Strong project management and strategic planning skills. Capable of acting as a project team leader on cross-functional, multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Ability to identify legal issues preventively, assess and synthesize impact and determine root cause, driving value and risk mitigation efficiently and effectively, aligned with company values and goals.
  • Commitment, accuracy and attention to details, problem-solving attitude.
  • Team player with passion for innovation.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Background knowledge in Compliance is a Plus
