Purpose & Key Results

  • Under general corporate supervision, provide professional geotechnical engineering support, leadership, analysis and review related to design, construction, and operation for Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) and water storage or sediment dams.
  • Serve as a resource for geotechnical information and analysis in these fields.

    Essential Duties

  • Supervise, guide and participate in activities to maintain performance of TSFs and water dams through inspection, measurement, data management, interpretation, analysis, coordination, problem solving and reporting.
  • Apply and improve performance of TSFs, and water management systems and associated procedures for assigned active and inactive facilities.
  • Serve as point of contact with Corporate’s Tailings & Water Management Team, including tracking recommendations, ensuring compliance with those recommendations, and reporting actions regularly.
  • Engage the Engineer of Record (EoR) in the design, construction, operations and performance monitoring of site TSFs, and water dams.
  • Collaborate with operators, engineers and maintenance to continuously ensure good performance of TSFs, and water management areas and to identify and implement associated improvements including the mine, process, tailings, water, environmental and safety areas.
  • Oversee construction Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) activities for TSFs and water dams.
  • Complete monthly Critical Control Reports (CCRs) for the site’s dams.
  • Communicate accurate, timely and relevant information to the Operations management team.
  • Participate in risk assessments pertaining to tailings and / or water management systems.
  • Support and / or lead site projects related to tailings and water management including life-of-mine planning.
  • Contribute to annual operational and sustaining capital budget preparation by supplying costs and recommendations.
  • Assist with the development, maintenance and implementations of strategic plans and sustaining capital forecasts for five-year and life of mine plans for assigned TSFs, and water management infrastructure.
  • Manage appropriate budgets for consulting and other services such as drilling and construction contractors.
  • Review designs in key practice areas and understand interaction with other functional areas / disciplines.
  • Apply relevant standards and guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as required
  • Training & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering or related Engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum, with courses in Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering and five (5) years of experience in an applicable field of expertise; OR
  • Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering or related Engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum, with courses in Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering and three (3) years of experience in an applicable field of expertise.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or equivalent relevant certification (as applicable).
  • Knowledge in the principles and practices of civil, geological, geotechnical and hydrological engineering or a related field of science or engineering.
  • Able to demonstrate technical competence through design and / or operations experience in at least one of the following work areas : TSFs water dams, water balance.
  • Knowledge of appropriate software (MS Office, AutoCAD) and Geotechnical data analysis.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing to a diversely-educated audience.
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety of yourself and others.
  • P referred Qualifications :

  • Master’s degree in a related Engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE or PEng) Certification, as per jurisdiction.
  • Active tailings deposition experience including planning and execution process and / or earth embankment construction monitoring and quality assurance.
  • Experience with geotechnical slope stability instrumentation and monitoring programs, data management, and analysis.
  • Experience reviewing and editing geotechnical engineering reports and documents for a variety of applications.
  • Engineering experience in geotechnical data collection and analyses including field investigations, lab testing, soil characterization, seepage analyses and slope stability.
  • Experience in surface water hydrology, hydraulics, and groundwater hydrology in addition to geotechnical experience.
  • Working Conditions

  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English (or language of location with some proficiency in English).
  • Ability to communicate in English (or language of location with some proficiency in English) with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards.
  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment.
  • Work is in a mine setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity and work on elevated platforms.
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 30 pounds) during the course of the workday.
