The Research team focuses on technologies that will allow us to offer novel solutions to challenges company-wide. Today those challenges may seem impossible to overcome, but our mission’s team is to develop a vision of what will become important in the future, and explore the possibilities of how to best solve those problems.

About the job

In this role you will work on different research projects (mostly focused on optics) from definition to implementation. This is a wide spectrum role covering different stages of project development, requiring both flexibility during definition phases (in order to brainstorm innovative solutions) and discipline and focus on delivery phases (in order to execute in an effective and timely manner).

Reporting to the Head of Research, you will work closely with the research team, covering the optical aspects of several projects.

Principal Responsibilities :

In this role, your team will expect you to work independently on various research projects (mostly optics), being able to champion each project from inception to delivery.

This means that you will be expected to implement proof of concepts to evaluate different solutions including simulations, prototypes, lab setups and hardware systems.

Satellogic values teamwork, and you will be expected to assist and contribute in all research portfolio and associated activities, and foster cross-team communication and collaboration which will be needed for the implementation of the team’s initiatives and findings.

Based on your previous experience, you will :

  • Model, perform simulations and analysis of lenses, telescopes or filters, and of sensor components for imaging optics in visible light and infrared (ray tracing, fourier optics, radiometry).
  • Contemplate and propose solutions to open problems and situations.
  • Collaborate with product managers on requirements and feasibility analysis of projects involving optical components or processes.
  • Define and engineer acceptance criteria, quality metrics and acceptance procedures for external suppliers.
  • Partner with multiple suppliers to obtain the best product costing and quality and improve supply chain reliability
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers in optomechanical design of space optical systems components
  • About you Required Experience :

  • Degree in optical engineering, physics or similar field of study or equivalent work experience.
  • 3 year experience in the analysis of optical systems and hands on experience in optical labs, specially with imaging systems
  • Experience executing complex engineering projects in a dynamic environment with tight deadlines.
  • Some experience with diffusion models (gas)
  • Required Skills :

  • Scripting and automation skills (Python preferred)
  • Availability to travel to suppliers or manufacturing plant as required
  • Advanced English speaker.
  • Capacity to learn continuously and passion for pushing the limits.
  • Problem solving : Ability to analyze problems and search for solutions, always exploring multiple alternatives.
  • Communication : Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) in excellent English at all hierarchical levels.
  • Attitude : Empathy, initiative, accountability.
  • Other skills we value

  • Experience with ray tracing optical design software
  • Experience with mechanical CAD software.
  • Advanced use of simulation or CAD software platform of choice.
  • Spectroscopy experience
